Article by Nick Grimshawe

Migraines are not a beautiful summer morning topic. Yet anything that lessens someone’s enjoyment of life, statistics indicate over 28 million people in North American suffer from the neurologic disorder of migraines, qualifies the subject as fair game in my eyes.

While researching for this article, I did a Google search, which returned 7,910,000 results. There are even blogs out there that have migraines as their main subject.

What is a Migraine?

Experts differ on the definition. The easiest description is just to say a migraine is a severe form of headache. I’m lucky enough not to have suffered very many migraines in my lifetime, but I still remember the one that took me to the emergency room of the local hospital. A migraine can last from 4 to 72 hours, bring on severe nausea sometimes with vomiting, and cause sensitivity to light and sound. The pain usually occurs on one side of the head, thus the derivation of the word from the Greek (them again) hemicranias, or half a head, the half you’d dearly love to be rid of at the time.

Aura

The online Oxford dictionary defines an Aura as a supposed invisible force surrounding a living creature. Again from the Greek. People often experience an Aura before the onset of a migraine. Symptoms include, blind spots, flashes, and numbness in the extremities, weakness, and problems with speech. Aura occur due to a lack of blood flow to the brain due to constriction of the blood vessels. Auras give sufferers a chance to react in time to prevent a severe migraine.

Early Warning Prevention.

An Aura usually means you have 15 to 30 minutes to head off a migraine. Migraine suffers have a self-defence regimen. Recent research suggests the following:

Take medication immediately but be careful to avoid over reliance on medication as these can have other long-term impacts on health. The Chinese, famous for their prowess with medicinal herb, recommend drinking green tea or green tea concentrate. Find a quiet area away from noise and light. Many businesses are adapting their work places to assist employees by reducing noise, and glare.

Triggers

Migraines can be triggered by: Stress Menstrual cycle for women Too much or too little sleep Skipping meals Changes in barometric pressure (look out a storm is coming). Foods most famous, chocolate, and red wine Aspartame used in diet sodas Additives like MSG, Nitrates and Sulphites Birth control pills or hormone therapy

Strangely enough, modern research also indicates that over use of Headache pain medications can lead to a rebound headache.

Prevention

A study published in The Lancet offers these suggestions and rates their effectiveness:

Acupuncture with a 2.3 fewer migraine days Sham Acupuncture, where no acupuncture pressure points are needled resulted in 1.3 fewer migraine days Drug therapy with 2.1 fewer days

Biofeedback training is also suggested as treatment for headache.

Diet is often sited as a cause and a treatment for headaches. Avoid trigger foods; don’t skip meals, coupled with regular exercise.

The newest research suggests that patients can get a 50% reduction in migraines from using a multivitamin.

Low dose multivitamin complex is a great source of the vitamins and minerals suggested by researchers which are: Magnesium, Riboflavin and other B vitamins, Vitamin C, Calcium and Pantothenic Acid.Low dose gives your body a better chance to absorb the nutrients before being flushed.

Women suffer more than men. The next time a migraine strikes it might help you to know that Cleopatra, love goddess of the Nile, spent endless hours lounging on her golden couch coping with the pain. Joan of Arc and more recently Princess Margaret often fell victim to debilitating headaches. If the men are feeling a little smug right now, Peter the Great and Charles Darwin endured the agony of migraines as well.

Useless Information

Aretaeus of Cappodocia first described a headache in 80AD. What they where called before that is lost in the dusts of history.

Question by Foksy: Added to: Help with Chronic Migraines?
First post: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylc=X3oDMTY5dTFrcjRyBElfYWd1aWQDNjUzRzRaNVdXSUVENkVIVEZBNFFZWlZXUzQESV9jZ3VpZAM2NTNHNFo1V1dJRUQ2RUhURkE0UVlaVldTNARJX2Nwcm9wA3lhaG9vLnNvY2lhbGJsb2cueWNhLmNsaWVudARJX3VjbnR4AwRJX3VzcmMDeS51cy5hbnN3ZXJzBElfdXN1aWQDMjAxMDEwMjcyMDE5NThBQUNvclpaX1IxUXJGWUIzYWEESV91dHlwZQNhc2sEX1MDMjAyMzQzNTI2MQ–?qid=20101027201958AACorZZ

Didn’t have enough room to add stuff and my link didn’t work so I made another post. Read both if you can!

Headache issues since 7th grade: got an MRI. Gradually got migraines here and there (meaning they got more painful), three years ago they got pretty bad, last year they got excruciating to the max and more often. I just got an MRI but don’t have results yet, I can always post it if that’s helpful to anyone. Added note here: I have pain most of the time literally and I think it would almost be 24/7 with out medicine.

If you can help me or have advice, I’m going to cover what I’ve done in case you/someone thinks that’s the answer.

*Imitrex – Works for moderate/normal migraines but I’ve stopped taking because of this next one;

*Atenolol : Prevention for migraines, but its generally a heart/blood pressure medication. I have tried different dosages. It helped me have a little less, but my life is still not livable.

*Topamax: Didn’t work, made me emotionally unstable-was generic though.

*Lithium: Sometimes-can help when I combine with Tramadol. Can only take it once a night for sleep.

*Tramodol: As stated, was prescribed it after the hospital. For whatever reason the family doctor makes me ask for a refill every time I need it, even though I can’t take freaking Imitrex with Atenolol bc I feel bad. He never told me that! I would have 3 refills on it too, I could’ve damaged my heart. Tramodol works on some migraines; for really bad ones I take 2 ASAP or nothing happens. Even then it can come back.

*Oxycotin/Hydrocode/Oxycodone: Has worked the highest percentage of the time, failed twice out of maybe two months (which is amazing for me right now) and that’s when I went to the hospital. Sometimes when I’ve tried all day or a WEEL to get rid of pain 1/2 can work. However, there are times I’ve needed two or three. I’ve heard this term a few times, “rebound headaches”. But I basically have constant pain anyway and I’m eating Tramadol like chips to take the edge of. I think THAT’S WORSE. It’s so incredibly bad I don’t care about anything but relief. That might sound irresponsible but trust me, I know pain. Fractured (cracked) bones, foot ran over by a car, hyper extended knew–which is the knew going the wrong way. It really doesn’t compare to that pain because its so constant and something about a migraine is just worse.

*I’ve been on Cymbalta and another anti-depressant and Lamictal. Cymbalta didn’t help mood enough or pain at all and Lamictal is helping mood and back pain and not migraines.

Hospital visits are like, 100 bucks co-pay and then a lot more after that. So many times I want to go and I can’t, I have to hold my head and breath because I have barely any medicine and people freak out with oxycodone, but I don’t because I can’t exercise, play sports, read, watch TV sometimes… I’d almost rather die than worry about anything else. Over the counter epically fails for me. How can I approach doctors or what can I ask for?

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Harley Drive
latest research and treatment indicates persistent migraines are caused by a narrow artery in the neck feeding the brain and can be cured permanently by inserting a stent in the artery to keep, it open

Migraines are severe, throbbing headaches that may or may not be accompanied by nausea, possibly with visual disturbances and other symptoms. Migraine incidences have increased by 50 percent within the last twenty years, with an estimated 25 to 30 million people suffering from them in the United States. Three out of four of these 25 to 30 million are women, with up to 24 percent of women experiencing at least one migraine in their lives and only 12 percent of men getting migraines. Migraines are one of the most severe types of headache.

Research has described migraines as vascular headaches, as they involved excessive dilation or contraction of the brain

Article by RateND

Many of us may have experience an excruciating headache that literally turn us into a giant grouch. Although there’s no cure for migraine, the pain can be avoided and managed using Acupuncture. Studies show that most migraine sufferers are women, and in Canada and United States, the recurring throbbing headache happens to 1 in 10 people between the ages of 10 and 40.

What exactly is migraine?

Ever experience a severe, pulsating pain on one side of the head? Well, that’s migraine. Other symptoms like cold hands and feet, nausea (or even vomiting), and sensitivity towards bright light and sound are usually accompany the severe, recurring vascular headache. This explains why people who suffer migraine are often advised to switch off their computers and stay in a dark, quiet room. When migraine occurs, the pain could last between few hours up to 72 hours, very few chronic sufferers were even admitted to the Emergency Room due to prolonged vomiting.

Cause of migraine is arguable, but many suggest that some things we consume (like alcoholic drink, tobacco, fermented food, etc) could trigger migraine. Other common causes like change in sleeping patterns due to stress, barometric pressure change, hunger, and past psychological traumas are also cited as possible migraine causes.

Despite being common, migraine has no cure. Prescribed or over-the-counter painkillers are often containing substances that cause blood vessels to thin; it’s their ultimate and sometimes only goal.

Acupuncture is so much better than pain relief medicines

Painkillers could be carcinogenic (transform normal cells into cancer cells) and dependency to analgesic medicines can trigger liver and kidney damage, also contributing to a long term and often lingering migraines.

Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese healing method by inserting sterile needles into different part of the skin, could bring brings immediate and sustainable effects that many antibiotics and painkillers could not. Why’s that? Basically Acupuncture aims to promote and improve your natural immune system by managing the good flow of your Qi (sometimes written as Chi, roughly means “life force”). In short, acupuncture works better than drugs alone.

Finding the right experts in Canada

As health care costs increasing, Canadians embrace more and more the art and science of natural healing and disease prevention. Earlier this month, Canada celebrates Naturopathic Medicine Week. Natural healing such as Acupuncture, Eastern and Western herbal medicine, and other treatments gain popularity as health solutions to the mainstream ones.

According to Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI), Naturopathic Doctors graduated in the British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario are licensed to use acupuncture method in the their practices according to the license they obtained from the provincial regulatory boards such in British of Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.

If you’re considering a healthier and a more natural alternative to painkillers and would like to give Acupuncture a go? You can look up licensed Naturopathic Physicians practicing Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) closest to you on RateND‘s website.

Article by John Scott

If you are one of the millions of Americans that suffer from migraine headaches, then you know all too well how debilitating they can be on your quality of life. Migraine headaches are a very common problem, but because they affect every person differently, they can be very difficult to treat. Furthermore, not all migraine treatments on the market work the same for every patient, and they are expensive to boot. With the health care crisis in America what it is today, who has hundreds of dollars every month to try new medication that has no guarantee? Not many people do, which is why many Americans are looking for new ways of living with migraines and treating them effectively. A migraine headache is classified as a migraine when it occurs on one side of your head and is accompanied by other symptoms such as light or sound sensitivity, nausea, and sometimes even vomiting. It is often described as a throbbing sensation and can debilitate someone enough that they are unable to work, drive, or even function. Most of the time when a migraine attack comes on, the individual is forced to retreat to a quiet and dark room until the migraine attack is over. For some people, this can last days. Migraines are a severe interference with life, and one of the most commonly cited reasons for missed work. For those that suffer from migraines regularly, a series of triggers is often identified that sets off these migraine attacks. The unfortunate thing is that what is a trigger for one person may not be for another, so keeping track of what you are doing and eating around the time of a migraine attack will help you towards managing them better. These triggers can be food triggers such as chocolate, food items with red food coloring, red wine, and many other triggers. Some people even find weather changes to be a trigger for migraines, and will suffer attacks when the barometric pressure changes from one extreme to another quickly. In a lot of cases, people know what their triggers are, but there is nothing they can do to avoid them, such as thunderstorms or humidity hikes.

When it comes to cases like that, knowing what will be your best comfort zones, alongside having adequate migraine treatment, will go a long way towards helping you manage your migraines. Knowing your triggers will be enough to help you avoid the ones you can avoid, and prepare for the ones you can’t. Sometimes having enough medication on hand when you know a storm is coming is all the preparation you can do to manage your migraines when unforeseen triggers crop up.

Living with your migraines also requires a healthy working relationship with your doctor. Those that suffer from migraines regularly have likely tried many prescriptions from their doctors already to combat migraine attacks. As you may already know, this can get costly, and in some cases, the medication may even make you sicker than the migraines. And the last thing you want is to resort to narcotic medications that will add addiction to your list of complaints. Today, many doctors are veering from traditional migraine medications and offering prescriptions for medication like Tramadol. This medication, also known as Ultram, works as an anti-inflammatory and targets the areas on your central nervous system that are experiencing pain, thus working very effectively for migraine headaches. When you are looking for new ways to live with migraines without costing a fortune or giving you more side effects, you may want to order Tramadol online for your most cost effective least addictive form of migraine relief.
